In the digital age, students can easily share course materials, including data and images. Because of this issue, I created a semester-specific course token. This token typically features the semester term, a science-related image, and space for students to write their names.

Generally, I ask for a photo as evidence of each experiment a student completes. Students must include the course token in the required image to earn credit for their lab work. The attached file is an example of a Carolina lab that already prompts students to post photos, and the student put the course token as requested.

Hi Kimberly,

This is a great suggestion for increasing academic integrity in our lab courses.  A photo is easy for a student to attach to their work as evidence that they completed the work.

Thank you for sharing,

Sue

I have had students stage pictures of them doing the lab and just using data found online, so I now require very specific pictures for each experiment that would be very hard to stage (i.e. a picture of the reaction product being massed on the balance with the mass clearly shown).  It is much more difficult to use online data when you need to prove the mass that you are recording in the report.

I make it a point to provide video feedback to students in just about everything I do for pedagogical reasons--making a connection with an engaged face and human-- not just text on the screen.  I realized it's a great tool for integrity too however! I have student record videos of themselves explaining what they are doing, why they are doing it, or showing me when/where something may not have gone as planned.

Thank you, Kimberly, for the suggestion of having students include a course token in the required image(s) to earn credit for their lab work. This has helped increase academic integrity in my microbiology course. In addition, students are supposed to initial and date all tubes and plates, but sometimes it is hard to read this in the pictures.
