So to make the students excited about their lab kits I ask them to take part in a discussion as soon as they got their kit and unboxed their kit. I ask students to take out everything in the box and pick their favorite item. Many picked the skeleton. I told them if the skeleton was their favorite item in the kit that they could dress their skeleton up. Some dressed their skeleton up in a scarf in front of a fire with smores and the list goes on and on. Some picked the dissecting samples like the rat and posted a picture of their cat and the rat. This discussion prompted students to open their box and be creative!
Hello Deanna,
What a wonderful idea! The skeleton is a favorite among the Carolina Distance Learning staff too. It has been dressed up in many outfits over the years! As instructor, I find the discussion board invaluable to help us hear our students' "voice". I like how you created a fun forum for the students to engage in so you can not only verify they received their kit, but to learn more about their personalities.
